History
The ROSARIO DISTRICT HOSPITAL was established by DOH in April 18, 1972 thru the efforts of the late Hon. Jose D. Aspiras, Congressman of the second district of the Province of La Union.
It was originally situated at the present Rural Health Unit, adjacent to the Municipal Hall facing the town plaza of Rosario. Initially, there were only (14) hospital personnel including the Chief of Hospital, (2) nurses, (2) nursing attendants, (1) Administrative officer who was concurrently Cashier and storekeeper, (1) Clerk, (1) bookkeeper, (1) cook, (1) medical technologist, (1) janitor, (1) food service worker, (1) x-ray technician, and a driver.
The first Chief of Hospital was Dr. Braulio M. de Venecia. A year later, to improve hospital service, an additional physician was added to the roster of employees.
In 1974, the hospital transferred to a new site as a 25-bed capacity district hospital in a 9,000 square meter lot donated by Juan Casuga, along the Manila North Road in Barangay Concepcion where it presently stands.
In 1975, Dr. de Venecia was replaced by Dr. Bonifacio Sales, who was officer-in-charge until 1977 when Dr. Mario Bandonil was transferred from Dona Gregoria Memorial Hospital in Agoo, La Union to Rosario District Hospital as the new Chief of Hospital.
RDH was devolved from DOH to the PGLU in 1992. In 1997, Dr. Bandonil retired and Dr Godofredo Garcia, the senior resident, assumed as Officer-in-charge. He was appointed Chief of Hospital (4) years later on March 23, 2001 until August 16, 2004. He was succeeded by Dr. Hector T. Benas as a result of a re-assignment of Chiefs of Hospitals by Governor Victor F. Ortega. After a stint of (2) years at RDH, Dr. Benas was designated Provincial Health Officer I on September 28, 2007 and Dr . Marida R. Poligrates, the senior resident physician of RDH assumed office as OIC. During her term of office, an ultrasound and a new anesthesia machine was added to RDH’s inventory of equipment. She was succeeded by Dr. Edwin Laureta as Officer-in-charge . It was during Dr. Laureta’s term that plans for the new building for private rooms, funded by HFEP were laid out. Actual implementation and construction started after the assumption of Dr. Fidel M. Mabalot as OIC in January 2011 who was subsequently appointed CO . It was during this time that DOH implemented the reclassification of government hospitals and RDH was reclassified as a level I hospital. Thru the Hospital Facilities Enhancement Program (HFEP) of the DOH, a series of infrastructure projects were implemented and medical equipment were delivered. Among the various infrastructure projects were the private rooms building and new Pediatrics ward in 2012, the renovation of the Dietary building, the construction and completion of the new Annex building housing the E.R., OPD, Laboratory, X-Ray room, pharmacy and administrative offices in 2016. New HFEP equipment include autoclaves, an x-ray machine, a Bioref,OR table, DR table,1 a 125 KVA power generator with ATS, among others.
