The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Local Economic Enterprise and Investment Promotions Unit (LEEIPU) is steadfast in its commitment to empower the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) of the province in order to enhance the business climate and promote the spirit of #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan.

In partnership with Department of Science and Technology La Union Provincial Office (DOST), Department of Trade and Industry La Union Provincial Office (DTI-LUPO), Landbank of the Philippines โ€“ La Union Lending Center and Rang-ay Bank, a training for MSMEs was held on July 6, 2022 at the 4th Floor La Union Provincial and Administrative Commercial Building, City of San Fernando, La Union. The seminar aims to ensure that the MSMEs continuously develop, expand their market scope and potentially increase revenue.

This initiative prepares the MSMEs of La Union for the availability of Halal certified food choices and Muslim friendly establishments. Ms. Jara G. Acoon, Science Research Analyst of DOST provided an overview of Halal Awareness and steps for certification. She reiterated the importance to consider everyoneโ€™s perspective on their cultural and religious practices. Halal Certified establishments will greatly impact to the Halal industry, and this could also help MSMEs to expand their market reach.

Meanwhile, the topic on Packaging and Labeling was discussed by Mr. Michael John C. Maquiling, Science Research Specialist II from DOST. This aims to provide awareness to MSMEs on the fundamentals of packaging and labeling and to improve their existing designs for the development of the products' marketability and sales.

The Labeling and Branding Ordinance of La Union was discussed, specifying the requirements of products to bear the โ€œproudly made in La Union, Philippinesโ€ print in order to identify the products of the province. The process to use the I Love La Union Logo was also detailed during the seminar to ensure that products made from La Union are recognizable and would stand out.

DOST Programs and Services specifically on SETUP program (Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program) for MSMEs and opportunities was presented by Engr. Edison M. Acosta, Science Research Specialist II. He reiterated the importance of partnerships to help the local MSMEs with opportunities to credit and other programs of government agencies.

Mr. Julius Cruz Executive Account Officer of DTI La Union presented the Small Business Corporation Credit Programs such as Pondo sa Pagbabago at Pag-asenso (P3) Program while Ms. Maricel T. Duculan, Development Analyst discussed the DTI Programs and services and Business Plan with Personal Entrepreneurial Competencies that will capacitate MSMEs and enhance skills to develop their business potential.

Loan Credit Programs and Services was presented by Ms. Janyfi B. Cisnero, Account Officer of Landbank La Union-Lending Center and Ms. Florence Joy L. Licudine, Marketing Head of Rang-ay Bank. They both highlighted the credit financial programs that will help MSMEs recover and expand their business.

This activity envisions a more competitive business environment for MSMEs to become resilient, sustainable, and innovative by improving their products and services.
