One hundred youth were given employment opportunities at the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE)’s Special Program for the Employment of Students (SPES). SPES is a youth employment-bridging program which aims to provide temporary employment to qualified student-beneficiaries during their school breaks.

With the partnership of the Provincial Public Employment Service Office (PESO) and DOLE Regional Office 1, two batches of SPES beneficiaries were deployed in the different offices of the PGLU. The first 50 beneficiaries were deployed from July 7 to August 5, 2022, while the other half just started their employment on August 17, 2022.

Before the start of their 22-day employment, the SPES beneficiaries went through an orientation with Provincial PESO Manager, Ms. Charito C. Dator; and Mr. Rowell B. Timoteo, Labor and Employment Officer II. Ms. Dator discussed the guidelines on the SPES implementation and the process of claiming their salary. The activity also includes the signing of Employment Contracts and Oath of Undertaking, ID photo capturing and registration of biometrics. The Provincial PESO Manager advised the SPES Workers to give their best in gaining early work experience and develop skills for future employment after their graduation during the SPES Orientation.

The SPES beneficiaries also had an opportunity to meet the Provincial Governor in a courtesy call. Gov. Raphaelle Veronica β€œRafy” Ortega-David encouraged the SPES beneficiaries to work hard, learn and improve their skills. She also ensured them that their stay in the PGLU will be a productive and significant one.

Twenty-year old Arlen Tadeo Verceles, a BS Education Major in English student of Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University – Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC) and one of the first batch SPES Beneficiaries, described her SPES experience as one of a kind.

β€œSPES allowed me to acquire new skills needed in my future career or profession. It also enhanced my critical thinking and communication skills since we were tasked to conceptualize and create a simple tracking system for the collaterals being requested at the Provincial Information Office. Thus, my SPES journey is very remarkable and significant because it changed my perspective about life and profession,” she narrated.

PESO-La Union also placed 10 students in a fast food chain, and 25 students in DMMMSU-MLUC.

The PGLU remains to have a dynamic partnership with different national agencies for better implementation of education and employment programs in the province, a manifestation of #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan for a #StrongerLaUnion.
