SP, PG - ENRO SET PLANS AS LA UNION PREPARES FOR EL NIÑO

To strengthen measures that will address the adverse impacts of El Niño phenomenon, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) and the Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) has roll out plans for the province in preparation for the expected drought during the 55th Regular Session on July 18, 2023.

During the session, the Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office-OIC Ms. Annalyn Valdez provided updates on the status of water supply in the province and on the current initiative and mitigation plans of every component Local Government Units (LGUs) on water conservation including updates in the implementation of Provincial Ordinance No. 088-2016, entitled: “An Act Providing for the Creation of Provincial Water Conservation Committee in each of the local Government Units in the Province of La Union.

SP and PG-ENRO urged the public to take part in #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan through conserving water to mitigate the effect of El Niño as it threatens the sustainability of water resources in the province.

Based on the provincewide survey being conducted to gauge the current status of water supply in the province, the initial result showed that 68% of the respondents answered that their source of potable water is from refilling stations, 27% from deep well, and the remaining 5% on water districts. Same survey also showed that the majority of the respondents answered that they have experienced water outages, almost every month, especially during the months of March, April and May.

In response to the call for La Union PROBINSYAnihan and Kalikasan Naman campaign, the PG-ENRO Chief outlined their office’s various programs, projects and activities including the conduct of action planning workshop with component local government units and national agencies in developing plans and programs to address the arising issues and concerns on water supply.

Temporary Presiding Officer, Maria Rosario Eufrosina P. Nisce urged the PG-ENRO and the Honorable Members of the SP to make water conservation a top priority by coming up with a more integrated approach in terms of water collection and conservation as most LGUs do not have stable water sources and salinity is a concern. The presentation as well as the recommendations therein are referred to the SP Committee on Environment and Human Ecology and Security as the lead committee for further study.
