The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) Committee on Cooperatives chaired by Board Member Gerard G. Ostrea visited Oaqui #1 Multi-Purpose Cooperative of Luna for a consultation meeting on June 17, 2022 at the said cooperative’s office at Brgy. Oaqui #1, Luna, La Union.

The Officers and Board of Directors was led by Vice-Chairperson Mr. Aurelio G. Balala, representing the cooperative Chairperson, Ms. Cristina R. Obaña. The group discussed with Board Member Ostrea their best practices, struggles during the current pandemic, and future plans for their organization.

Oaqui #1 Multi-Purpose Cooperative was once awarded as one of the outstanding cooperatives in the entire province of La Union, a testimony of their hard work and unity which steered their organization to become a millionaire cooperative which started with 25 members in 1982 and now has 190 active members within the barangay including members from other barangays in the municipality. Commendable practices of the cooperative include rendering community service and conducting gift giving in the barangay as part of their christmas celebration, distribution of relief packages during the height of lockdowns, and giving awards and incentives to its members.

The said public consultation was conducted in aid of legislation to check on the status of local cooperatives and serve as guide of the committee in drafting ordinances and policies aligned with helping these organizations to help the province move closer to achieving its vision to be the Heart of Agri-tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
