As a component of the project "Kasanayan sa Kasaysayan," the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office β Culture and Arts Section (LUPTO-CAS) officially completed distributing 1,383 copies of "La Union: The Making of a Province 1850-1921" History Book to all target stakeholders of the province.
Recipients of the 2020 edition of the book written by local historian Dr. Adriel Obar Meimban include libraries, local government units, barangays, basic education schools, and PGLU offices and hospitals in the province.
The book covers essential historical information from when La Union was created in 1850 during the Spanish era to 1921 when the Americans took control of the Philippines. Divided into four main parts and eight chapters, the book is based on primary sources culled from materials researched in the archives and libraries in the country and United States. It took 25 years for Dr. Meimban to finish writing the book, which served as his master's thesis and doctoral dissertation on March 2, 1997.
During the book's relaunching in celebration of the 171st La Union Foundation Anniversary, Gov. Francisco Emmanuel "Pacoy" R. Ortega III underscores PGLU's endeavor to maintain the heritage and cultural strengths and provide an accessible link between past, present, and future. Dr. Meimban emphasizes that it is the right time to give consciousness to the province and know its local history because it is the tool that explains the present status of the community and the people.
This August, LUPTO-CAS shall also conduct the SARIRIT: La Union History Quiz contest which will be participated in by elementary and junior high school students, and Sangguniang Kabataan Federation officers. As a component of Ayat Festival 2021, all questions for the history quiz will be based on the book's contents.
"The La Union: The Making of a Province, 1850 β 1921" is the first comprehensive book written about the northern Philippines province and is now valued as a "priceless legacy and precious heritage" of La Union. Moving forward, Dr. Meimban was commissioned by PGLU to write the 1922-2021 history book sequel to cover 100 years of significant historical, socio-political, and economic growth and development of La Union.
