GIVE EVERY CHILD THE CHANCE TO SMILE. Members of the Philippine Band of Mercy (PBM) surgical team and Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) staff work together during the operation of one of the beneficiaries of the 5th Cleft Surgical Mission on April 21, 2018 at BDH, Bacnotan, La Union. Said activity is a joint project of PBM Smile Train Philippines and the Provincial Government of La Union.

“Changing the world one smile at a time.” this is the goal of Smile Train Philippines as it partnered with the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), headed by Gov. Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III, through Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH), headed by Dr. Zenserly D. Pagaduan and the Philippine Band of Mercy (PBM) in holding their Fifth Cleft Surgical Mission on April 21, 2018 at Bacnotan District Hospital.

A total of 10 patients with cleft deformity (bingot), ages ranging from 9 months to 14 years old, from all over the province and neighboring province of Ilocos Sur benefitted from the surgical mission. A pre-operation screening was held on April 10, 2018. Laboratory tests, x-ray, medicines, surgical operation, hospital accommodation and surgical team were all given free to the beneficiaries. The operation was performed by the team of Dr. Mary Grace Nario, plastic surgeon, and Dr. April Gervasio, anesthesiologist. A second batch of the same mission will be held at the La Union Medical Center (LUMC) on August 28, 2018 for the screening and September 8, 2018 for the operation.

According to Ms. Percy Benedictos, Executive Director of PBM, the provincial government is their pro-active partner in serving and helping unleashing the beauties and social energies of the children and individuals with cleft/facial deformity. She also emphasized that they owe the success of their programs to PGLU. “The continuity of our service is a need because there are less fortunate individuals who are still hurting due to their unfixed physical disfigurement,” she said.

PBM is a foundation that provides financially challenged children born with craniofacial deformities medical with surgical support that would allow them to have a better quality of life and a brighter future; while Smile Train Philippines is an international children’s charity that provides 100% free cleft repair surgery and comprehensive cleft care to children in more than 85 countries. Its goal is to “Give every child the chance to smile.”
