In celebration of the Month of the Ocean, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) has strengthened its efforts in mangrove conservation through a series of planting activities.

Through the Provincial Government – Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) and Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAG) in partnership with the component Local Government Units of Luna and Aringay, Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation, Inc., and People’s Organization, the mangrove planting activities took place on May 14 and May 17, 2024 in Barangay Pitpitac, Luna, and Barangay Dulao, Aringay, respectively. With the active participation of volunteers from the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, barangay and municipal officials, and local communities, the event demonstrates participant’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

Mangrove ecosystems are vital for coastal protection, carbon sequestration, and biodiversity conservation. Recognizing this, a total of 200 mangroves of various species such as kulasi, saging-saging, and dungon planted in Luna, and 300 mangroves of api-api and bakawan species planted in Aringay.

Embracing the #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan , this community-based initiative is a call for a collaborative effort to restore mangrove forest in the Province towards environmental improvement and community well-being.

In unity and solidarity in protecting the environment, this activity hopes to resound the call for action through the #KalikasanNaman campaign of the PGLU.
