PGLU Strengthens Avian Influenza Surveillance; Migratory Birds Tested Negative in Bird Flu

In celebration of World Wildlife Day 2025 with the theme “Wildlife Conservation Finance: Investing in People and Planet,” the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Provincial Government – Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) initiated the conduct of avian influenza surveillance through oropharyngeal swabbing in wild migratory and wild resident birds in Barangay Raois, Sto. Tomas, La Union which all yielded negative for Bird Flu results as reported by the Department of Agriculture (DA) Region 1 during the 1st quarter Environmental Management Coordinator’s Meeting on March 28, 2025.
This activity was jointly conducted with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Region 1 (DENR); the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian; and the DA. A total of eight oropharyngeal swabs were collected from the eight migratory birds comprising of three different bird species namely Pacific Swallow, Zebra Dove, and Collared Kingfisher. The samples were submitted to the Department of Agriculture Ilocos Region Integrated Agricultural Laboratories in Sta. Barbara, Pangasinan for laboratory analysis.
Further, a wildlife monitoring activity was also jointly conducted by the PG-ENRO in partnership with the DENR-PENRO La Union on March 3, 2025 at a private farm located in Barangay Pangao-aoan East, Aringay, La Union in celebration of World Wildlife Day.
The PGLU under the leadership of Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David continues to support the protection and promotion of La Union wildlife in alignment with the Republic Act 9147 or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act that ensures the safety and security of migratory birds in the country. Migratory birds stop briefly along wetlands to rest, hunt for food, and refuel for their migration journey.
The PG-ENRO continues to work in La Union PROBINSYAnihan with the DENR and DA to forward its #KalikasanNaman efforts for environmental preservation.
