The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through its Provincial Health Office (PHO), joined the global celebration of World Immunization Week 2025 with a powerful reminder of the role vaccines play in safeguarding communities against preventable diseases.

Held at the Speaker Pro-Tempore Francisco I. Ortega Convention Center in Sevilla, City of San Fernando, the event gathered rural health midwives and frontline health workers for an interactive session anchored on this year’s theme: “Magpabakuna: Bakuna sa Lahat, Kayang-Kaya.”

The event served as both a celebration of past immunization milestones and a call to action to address gaps in vaccine coverage across the province. Dr. Herminigildo M. Velasco, Provincial Health Officer II, opened the program by recounting his own experiences as a former Municipal Health Officer, emphasizing the importance of leaving no child behind. He expressed gratitude for the enduring partnership with the Philippine Pediatric Society – Northern Luzon Chapter, which has been instrumental in advancing La Union’s immunization initiatives.

Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, represented by Executive Assistant II Mr. Eleazar Belgica, delivered an inspirational message underscoring the crucial role of midwives and health workers in achieving herd immunity. “I trust that with your medical knowledge and years of experience, you will be among our strongest advocates for immunization here in the province,” the Governor expressed.

Dr. Crisanto M. Montemayor, Pediatrician and Vice President of the Philippine Pediatric Society – Northern Luzon Chapter, emphasized the shared responsibility of health professionals and LGUs in ensuring children receive full vaccination.

Mr. John Paul Aquino, Regional National Immunization Program Coordinator, highlighted progress in reducing unvaccinated children in La Union while addressing remaining challenges in remote areas.

Mr. Dino Duclayan, PHO Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit Head, presented data on vaccine-preventable diseases to help midwives understand the impact of immunization and enhance disease surveillance.

The celebration of World Immunization Week 2025 reaffirmed the province’s commitment to universal immunization and healthier communities. By empowering local health workers with the right tools, knowledge, and support, PGLU continues to take bold steps toward a future where no one is left unprotected.
