In alignment with Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David’s call for Universal Access to basic needs in the province, the Provincial Health Office (PHO) conducted a series of healthcare activities around La Union this past week. Said activities are in view of PHO’s KaLUsugan Caravan, which aims to provide comprehensive healthcare services to kaPROBINSYAnihan, especially those in Geographically Isolated and Disadvantaged Areas and Barangays in La Union.

On May 24, 2024, the International AIDS Candlelight Memorial was held at the Don Pacoy Ortega Memorial Amphi-Theater, La Union National High School, in the City of San Fernando. This event honored the memory of those who lost their lives to AIDS, supported individuals living with HIV and AIDS, raised community awareness, and mobilized community involvement in combating HIV/AIDS, thereby decreasing stigma.

The following week on May 28, 2024, the Municipal/City Federation Presidents of Barangay Nutrition Scholars (BNS) convened for their second-quarter meeting at the Manpower Building in Rosario. This meeting focused on preparing for the 2025-2028 Barangay Nutrition Action Plan, reviewing the first semester's accomplishments in Pabasa sa Nutrisyon and the Malunggay Ordinance, planning Nutrition Month activities, and preparing for the Regional BNS Congress.

Simultaneously, an on-site Reaching Every Purok Orientation took place at the Pugo Evacuation Center. The orientation aimed to update health workers on the National Immunization Program, strengthen immunization systems, improve equitable vaccine access, and address immunity gaps in disadvantaged communities.

May 29, 2024 was marked by the Provincial Health Board Meeting and a session with the Pharmaceutical and Health Care Association of the Philippines Cares. Additionally, a Medical and Dental Outreach Program was conducted in Boy-utan, Bauang, providing thorough physical examinations and consultations to the local residents.

On May 30, 2024, the #KaHeartnerSaKusina DASH Diet Recipe and Cooking Contest took place in Liquicia, Caba. This event promoted health awareness and encouraged healthier dietary practices among residents.

Lastly, on May 31, 2024, a Mother’s Class was held at the Rural Health Unit in Bacnotan, with lectures on responsible parenthood, family planning, mental health, care for pregnant mothers, and fertility awareness. Free medical and dental check-ups, along with vitamin distributions, were provided by the Local Government of Bacnotan. The day concluded with a meeting between the PHO and PhilHealth.

These activities exemplify the PGLU’s dedication to enhancing healthcare access and fostering a healthier La Union with the participation of health stakeholders in the province’s call for La Union PROBINSYAnihan under the KaLUsugan Caravan.
