To commemorate this year’s National Heroes Day, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) held a simple wreath laying rite at the Heroes Park on August 30, 2021.

Joining the whole nation, PGLU paid tribute to all the known and unknown Filipino heroes of the past revolutions and their contributions to the country’s freedom and independence. The event opened through a prayer that honored modern-day heroes who stand at the forefront of the current fight against the CoViD-19 pandemic.

Vice Gov. Mario Eduardo C. Ortega who represented Gov. Francisco Emmanuel β€œPacoy” R. Ortega III together with members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan led the flag raising and wreath laying ceremonies.

The event also commemorated the heroism of Ilocano writer and patriot Manuel Estabillo Arguilla of Bauang, La Union who was instrumental in the guerilla movement against the Japanese occupation. He was also a revered writer famous for his short story β€œHow My Brother Leon brought home a Wife.”

Local historian Dr. Adriel Obar Meimban together with the La Union Provincial Tourism Office – Culture and Arts Section staff visited the Tomb of the Unknown Soldiers and Bacsil Ridge in Barangays Parian and Bacsil in San Fernando, La Union, to offer a wreath of respect and remembrance.
