PGLU Partners with PGH for Care for Cerebral Palsy Patients

Doctors from the Philippine General Hospital (PGH) conduct free medical assessment to 49 Cerebral Palsy patients in La Union aged 1 to 18 years old on January 7-8, 2020 at the Provincial Social Welfare Office, LUTLDC, City of San Fernando, La Union. Said undertaking was done in coordination with the Provincial Government of La Union.

The Philippine General Hospital (PGH), in cooperation with the Provincial Government of La Union, rendered free medical assessment for Cerebral Palsy Patients at the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, LUTLDC, City of San Fernando, La Union on January 7-8, 2019.

49 patients aged 1-18 years old coming from the different municipalities/ city of La Union benefited from the said undertaking. They were assisted by their respective Rural Health Unit, Provincial Health Office, Commission on Population and were assessed by a group of doctors from the PGH. Provincial Administrator Jennifer Joan Ortega-Manguiat, with the approval and support of Gov. Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III, ensured that the activity would provide long – term benefit for the families of the patients by means of health education.

Parents and guardians underwent proper orientation on handling cerebral palsy (CP) patients such as possibility of management through therapies and feeding them.

In the said event, a computerized Three-Dimensional (3D) gait analysis was used to assess the situation of the patients. Said procedure is a non-invasive method used to accurately measure the patient’s movement. The doctors attached reflective markers using a double sided adhesive tape on the child’s bony landmarks to create an exact computer model and to accurately calculate and record the joint angles of the patients’ movements inside the gait lab. Result was released by the medical team after examination.

For further management and continuous of care, patients were referred to Ilocos Training and Regional Medical Center (ITRMC).

Cerebral palsy generally refers to a range of disorders affecting a person’s movement, muscle tone, balance and posture. It is caused by damage to the developing brain either during pregnancy or shortly after birth.
