PGLU LAUNCHES ABEL ACADEMY TO PRESERVE HANDLOOM WEAVING HERITAGE IN BANGAR

Preserving the intricate art of handloom weaving in the province, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the La Union Provincial Tourism Office (LUPTO), implemented the Abel Academy: School of Living Traditions, on November 25 to 27, 2024, at Nogueras Weaving, Bangar, La Union.
With the La Union PROBINSYAnihan of the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Bangar, the initiative attracted 40 young Bangareños eager to learn about their cultural heritage.
The three-day program immersed participants in the traditional craft of handloom weaving, providing them with hands-on training under the guidance of experienced and skilled Cultural Bearers who introduced foundational techniques, including beginner weaving and operating the traditional loom, known locally as the tillar. This experience not only equipped the youth with practical weaving skills but also fostered a deeper appreciation for the historical and cultural significance of the Inabel industry.
During the opening ceremony, LUPTO Officer-in-Charge, Julius A. Manabat, representing Governor Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, emphasized the significance of this initiative. He stated, “The Abel Academy is a vital program that empowers our youth and connects them with their roots. We are proud to support this program and look forward to seeing the creativity and innovation that will emerge from these young loom weavers.”
The major highlight of the event is the establishment of the Young Loomweavers Association of Bangar (YLAB) on its final day. This newly formed youth-led organization is dedicated to safeguarding and promoting the weaving tradition. Officers were also elected, namely, Phil Marie Nogueras-Lucina as President, Benigno C. Mon, Jr. as Vice President, Vanessa M. Lacsama as Secretary, Errol Paulo O. Carbonell as Treasurer, and Rico B. Liamco as Auditor.
The Abel Academy concluded with a showcase where participants exhibited their woven creations from the past two days, sharing their newfound skills and celebrating the artistry of handloom weaving.
Aligned with its vision to make La Union the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon, the PGLU, through its initiatives like Abel Academy, continues to champion cultural heritage while empowering local communities. With the active support of the LGU of Bangar, the province remains steadfast in its mission to ensure that the art of handloom weaving remains a cornerstone of La Union's identity, weaving a brighter and culturally enriched future for all.
