To commemorate the life and works of Dr. Jose P. Rizal, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) initiated a wreath laying ceremony at the Heroes Park, Capitol Complex, City of San Fernando, La Union on December 30, 2021.

Organized by the La Union Provincial Tourism Office (LUPTO) Culture and Arts Section, the ceremony was attended by PGLU officials, department heads, staff and representatives from United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) La Union Chapter and Davies Paints Philippines. The Heroes Park mural painting project of the UAP La Union also kicked-off which capped the short program honoring the 125th Anniversary of the Martyrdom of the country’s national hero.

On behalf of Gov. Francisco Emmanuel β€œPacoy” R. Ortega III, Board Member Nancy Corazon Bacurnay and Provincial Administrator Agnes Grace Cargamento led the wreath laying proper in front of Rizal’s monument. They were joined by Board Members Jennifer Mosuela-Fernandez, Gerard Ostrea, Christian Rivera and Geraldine Ortega. Joining the celebration are Provincial Health Officer Dr. Ed Posadas, LUPTO Officer-in-Charge Arthur Cortez, Jr., Provincial Warden Rimas Calixto and esteemed local historian and author Dr. Adriel Meimban.

Through a collaboration with UAP - La Union Chapter, the staircase mural painting project commences a line-up of Heroes Park beautification initiatives. PGLU aims to preserve and promote historical heritage through creative and artistic initiatives involving active stakeholders of the province. Once done, the mural painting piece which highlights major tourism and cultural icons of La Union hopes to encourage residents and tourists to visit the park and relive the heroism and example of the local and national heroes.

This year’s Rizal Day which centered on the theme β€œRizal: Para sa Agham, Katotohanan at Buhay,” was also commemorated by different local government units of the province in their jurisdictions.
