In celebration of International E-Waste Day, the Provincial Government of La Union, led by Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, together with the environmental management coordinators of its component Local Government Units (LGUs), benchmarked the Baguio City’s Treatment, Storage, and Disposal Facility located at Barangay Bakakeng, Baguio City.
This year’s theme “Join the E-Waste Hunt - Retrieve, Recycle, and Revive!” underscores the urgent need for effective e-waste management strategies. Given that, the activity focused on emulating Baguio City’s best practices in managing Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
Pollution Control Officer Ronaldo Ballecer provided an overview of the facility’s capabilities, which are the result of a collaborative effort involving the Global Environment Facility, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources-Environmental Management Bureau, and corporate partners including PLDT Inc. and SMART Communications, Inc. Additionally, he emphasized the legal framework guiding hazardous waste management and discussed its significant impacts on environmental and public health.
Participants also learned about Baguio City’s innovative programs aimed at transforming it into a SMART CITY, with the spotlight on the essential role of responsible waste management in fostering sustainable urban development.
This visit marks a significant step for La Union in adopting effective waste management practices to address the challenges posed by electronic waste, ensuring a cleaner and safer environment for future generations of KaPROBINSYAnihan.
