In a bid to equip Agriculture Extension Workers (AEWs) with the essential skills and knowledge needed to establish efficient solar-powered irrigation systems (SPIS) in the province, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), conducted a three-day intensive training program on the Design of SPIS on August 9 to 11, 2023, at the PDDRMO Conference Room City of San Fernando, La Union.

The training aims to elevate the professional capacities of AEWs by providing them with hands-on experience and evaluating the alignment of their skills with the available resources. The course was participated in by 19 participants including Agricultural Engineers, Civil Engineers, Electrical Engineers, and Agri-Infra-Coordinators from various Local Government Units within La Union.

The training used a variety of teaching methods, such as lecture-discussion, sharing of experiences, and workshops. Discussions included were Introduction to the Solar Powered Irrigation System; Crop Water Requirement Estimation; Power Requirement Estimation; Preparation of Cost Estimates; Pump/Controller Sizing and Selection; Field Visit of the established Solar Powered Irrigation System; and Hands-on activity in Designing SPIS.

Engr. Mark Lester Quigao and Engr. Marlo A. Suguitan of the Department of Agriculture – Regional Field Office 1 - Regional Agricultural Engineering Division (DA-RAED); and Engr. Vicente B. Aragon of VB Aragon Electrical Engineering Services served as resource person and shared their expertise on designing Solar Powered Irrigation System.

As La Union continues to move towards being the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025, the PGLU also prioritizes the modernization of agricultural practices that are more sustainable and beneficial to kaprobinsiaan farmers and the entire agriculture sector.
