Dedicated to preserving the biodiversity in the Province, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) headed by Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David organized a Biodiversity Assessment at Budahaw Falls on May 22, 2024, at Burgos, La Union.
The activity is in celebration of the International Day of Biodiversity following the theme “Be Part of the Plan,” serving as a call to action to mobilize KaPROBINSYAnihan in raising awareness on biodiversity issues.
Emphasizing the importance of La Union PROBINSYAnihan in driving environmental sustainability, the Provincial Government – Environment and Natural Resources Office collaborated with LGU-Burgos in undertaking the assessment. It aimed to identify the endangered species within the province’s biodiversity to be able to curate an effective system of protection and conservation.
It was determined that there are endangered species located in the area namely the Molave (Vitex parviflora) and vulnerable species namely the Dau (Dracontomelon dau) and “Pammittaogen” (Calophyllum pentapetalum) as per the DENR Administrative Order No. 2017-11 or the Updated National List of Threatened Philippine Plants and their Categories. Other species found are Tebbeg (Ficus spp), Horsetail (Equisetum), Napier (Cenchous puroureus), and Paper Bamboo (Dracaena surculusa).
The evaluation is among the actions in the PGLU’s strategic plan for environmental sustainability for the current and future generation of KaPROBINSYAnihan. Additionally, it is part of the attainment of the province’s vision of becoming the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
