In celebration of National Zero Waste Month, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), in partnership with the Jaime V. Ongpin Foundation Inc., spearheaded a clean-up drive in Barangay Ortiz, Naguilian, and Barangay Samara, Aringay, on January 22 and 24, 2025, respectively, collecting a total of 342 kilograms of waste from both areas.

With the theme “Integrating Sustainability and Circularity into the Informal Waste Sector,” the activity aimed to promote environmental consciousness by encouraging KaPROBINSYAnihan to conduct regular clean-up drives within the community. The effort yielded significant results, with 137 kilograms of waste collected in Naguilian and 205 kilograms in Aringay, most of which were plastic food wrappers, sando bags, and textiles/old clothes.

The initiative brought together barangay officials and residents; national government agencies; local government units; schools; volunteer groups; and members from the the Philippine National Police, Bureau of Fire Protection, and Coast Guard, highlighting the true spirit of La Union PROBINSYAnihan.

National Zero Waste Month, observed every January, was established through Presidential Proclamation No. 760, issued on May 5, 2014. This annual observance serves as a reminder for Filipinos to be mindful of waste production. The PGLU, headed by Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, is one with the national government in advocating for sustainable environmental practices under the Kalikasan Naman campaign.
