To mitigate the effects of the heat index on KaPROBINSYANihan students and teachers, La Union Schools Division Superintendent (SDS) Jorge M. Reinante outlined actions taken by their office regarding the conduct of face-to-face classes in the province in the 94th Regular Session of the 23rd Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) on April 16, 2024.
SDS Reinante was invited by the SP to discuss the guidelines on the suspension of face-to-face classes and work in public schools and the shift to remote education as per Department of Education (DepEd) Department Order 37 issued in 2022. As per said order, school administrators are granted the authority to halt in-person classes and transition to alternative teaching methods in situations of severe heat or other calamities that could compromise the health and safety of learners, teachers, and non-teaching personnel.
As of now, 38 schools in La Union shifted to modular distance learning, 73 to blended learning, while four Local Government Units are still conducting face-to-face classes according to SDS Reinante.
In anticipation of the closing of the school year 2023-2024, SDS Reinante likewise discussed that their office already reminded school heads to adhere to the policies on excessive spending, costly attire and venue for graduations and moving ups, off-campus activities, awards and recognition for the K to 12 Basic Education Program, electioneering, and partisan political activity, and a prohibition on the collection of any contribution or graduation or moving up fee.
On the other hand, through a Committee Report, SPMs Cynthia Angelica M. Bacurnay and Aaron Kyle M. Pinzon introduced a resolution requesting the Department of Education, La Union Schools Division Office, and City Schools Division of San Fernando, to intensify the implementation of DepEd Order 37, series of 2022, otherwise known as the Guidelines on the Cancellation or Suspension of Classes and Work in Schools in the event of Natural Disasters, Power Outages or Power Interruptions, and Other Calamities and the same was unanimously approved by the August Body.
The 94th Regular Session served as a platform for collaboration between the Provincial Government of La Union, SP, and LUSDO on strategies and legislations to address the challenges of the education sector that will redound to a much-improved quality of education to the learners and KaPROBINSYAnihan.
