In a testament to the power of education and second chances, two La Union Provincial Jail (LUPJ) Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) recently graduated from Junior High School through the Department of Education’s Alternative Learning System (ALS). The two PDLs aged 23 and 41, received their diplomas during a special ceremony held at South Central School, City of San Fernando, La Union on July 19, 2024.
The LUPJ, in collaboration with the Department of Education Region 1, offers the ALS program to provide flexible learning opportunities for PDLs who have missed out on traditional schooling. This program allows them to study at their own pace, with dedicated teachers providing individualized support and guidance.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, an advocate for education, has been instrumental in supporting the ALS program for PDLs by ensuring that resources and support are available to facilitate the successful implementation of the program.
One PDL, Mr. D.M., expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to complete his junior high school education.
Another PDL, J.P., echoed similar sentiments.
The PGLU has committed to continuing the ALS program at LUPJ, ensuring that more PDLs will have the opportunity to access education and build a brighter future for themselves.
