SUSTAINABLE SURFBREAK. Provincial Administrator Jennifer Joan O. Manguiat highlights the importance of responsible tourism in the celebration of La Union Surfing Break 2018 during the Opening Ceremony on October 26, 2018 at San Juan, La Union.
Manifesting its zeal to promote La Union as a sports and adventure destination as well as the premier surfing destination in Northern Luzon, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) led by Gov. Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III through the Provincial Tourism Office launched the 13th La Union Surfing Break (LUSB) on October 26 – 28, 2018 in Urbiztondo Beach in San Juan, Galongen-Quirino Beach in Bacnotan and Sol Arena Beach in Caba, La Union.
This biggest annual surfing event by volume in the Philippines was organized in collaboration with the Department of Tourism – Region 1 and Local Governments Units of San Juan, Bacnotan and Caba and supported by the La Union Conventions and Visitors Bureau and other tourism stakeholders.
Considering the importance of social responsibility, this year’s LUSB was held with different activities dispersed throughout several establishments in various hotels and restaurants in the vicinity of Urbiztondo. The idea is to avoid the build-up of waste along the shore and to also encourage local business to thrive.
The first day of the 13th LUSB started in the afternoon of October 26, 2018 with a Drum and Lyre combined with a Dance performance of the La Union National High School students at the beach front of Kahuna Beach Resort and Spa, Urbiztondo, San Juan, La Union. On behalf of Gov. Pacoy, the Provincial Administrator Jennifer Joan O. Manguiat welcomed everyone to the event. Also, present in the event were San Juan Mayor Arturo P. Valdriz, Bacnotan Tourism Officer Francia C. Gonzales, Caba Vice Mayor Igmedio L. Dugeña, Board Member Reynaldo M. Mosuela, Provincial Tourism Officer Adamor L. Dagang and 13th LUSB Event Organizer Jeff Ortega.
On the second day, Caba leg threw a Music Fest in the evening with “Never the Strangers” Band and “DJ Ron Poe” as their guests to entertain music enthusiasts, tourists and locals; Bacnotan leg were for sports enthusiasts with activities such as Beach Volleyball Competition, Sand Castle Fun Building Contest, Surfboard Design Contest and Kayak Race. Ending the 13th LUSB, a Mangrove Planting and Coral Gardening was done to give a good investment for future generations while resort owners, tourists and locals worked hand in hand for a Community Beach Clean-up to keep and preserve the cleanliness of the event venues/areas.
Aside from millennials coming from Metropolitan Manila, Baguio, and part of the Northern Luzon, many of the visitors in Urbiztondo Beach were foreigners who flew all the way from South Korea, Europe, and the United States of America to witness and be a part of the 13th LUSB.
The La Union Surfing Break was conceptualized in 2006 with the aim of educating and exposing surfing to the general public through entertainment and music. This national surfing event has already positioned the province as the Surfing and Active Lifestyle Holiday Destination of the Philippines. It solidified its standing in the country’s major festivals and events which brought great impact in achieving the province’s vision to be the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
