To ensure that food animals are clean and safe for human consumption in La Union, Dr. Santa Fe L. Palpal and Dr. Raquel P. Difuntorum of the Office of the Provincial Veterinarian joined other La Union veterinarians in the Regional Retooling of Local Government Units (LGUs) Field Staff on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Surveillance for the Respiratory Bacterial Pathogens of Swine and Poultry conducted by the Department of Agriculture Regional Field Office I on April 11-12, 2019 at Marand Resort and Spa, Bauang, La Union.

Also in the event were other veterinarian participants including Dr. Aljames Israel G. Rulloda of LGU San Juan; Dr. Ernestine T. Estillore of City of San Fernando Veterinary Office; Dr. Faye G. Baniqued of LGU Rosario; Dr. Marlina Rita M. Aquino of LGU Bacnotan; Dr. Rodolito M. Estrada of LGU Sto. Tomas; Dr. Laser Carol B. Pizarro of LGU Luna; Dr. Modesto Laroya of LGU Tubao; and Dr. Virgilio E. Milana of LGU Agoo.

The training aimed to give the veterinarians an overview on the disease of poultry and swine which are the usual animal commodity consumed by the public.

Sample collection, handling, storage and transport of laboratory specimen for disease diagnosis were also taught. Detection and prevention of AMR in animals will help in preventing it in humans who usually consume these food animals.

AMR is a phenomenon where microbes become resistant to antimicrobials thus reducing the options for treating diseases. After the training, it is expected that all participants will help in preventing the spread of AMR in La Union by prescribing antibiotics to animals only when it is needed.
