LU hosts NYC’s Youth Constituency Building for Empowered Local Youth Development Council

The Provincial Government of La Union, through the Provincial Youth Development Program under the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office, in partnership with the the National Youth Commission (NYC), organized the "Youth Constituency Building: Championing SK Advocacy, where 80 youth advocates from Regions I, II, III, IV-A, IV-B, V, NCR, and CAR participated in. Participants were composed of selected Local Youth Development Council members, Sangguniang Kabataan Officials, and Local Youth Development Officers.

The initiative held on May 25-26, 2024 at Ynad’s Hotel and Resort in City of San Fernando, La Union, aims to create a network of Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) advocates who will drive the effective implementation of SK policies and programs both locally and nationally.

The participants engaged in comprehensive discussions and workshops forming a coalition to advance their advocacy plans. Among the activities were the National Youth Assessment Study, which provides critical insights for the Philippine Youth Development Plan; SK Strategic Plan, and revisiting of the Youth Organization Registration Program guidelines.

The event was graced by youth advocates including Gov. Raphaelle Veronica "Rafy" Ortega-David represented by Provincial Youth Development Officer Zyjazz de Guzman; San Fernando City Youth Development Officer Jerome G. Acupan, representing Mayor Hermenegildo “Dong” Gualberto; Laurence Diestro, Commissioner-at-Large of the National Youth Commission; Atty. Reena Vivienne Chua Pineda, Commissioner representing Luzon of the National Youth Commission; and Maribeth Madrigal, Chief of the Division of Social Marketing Division of the National Youth Commission.

In her message, Gov. Rafy underscored the importance of youth advocacy in national development.

“That is why it is vital that we take part in this program as we will learn from the experts who will share about the power of the youth and our role to promote and protect the welfare of our constituents through Sangguniang Kabataan policies and programs. By empowering our SK and our Local Youth Development Councils, we are not just advocating for change, we are embodying it,” the governor said.

The event marked a critical step towards a more engaged and proactive youth sector as they make lasting and impactful contributions to the nation's development.
