Demonstrating commitment to heritage conservation and environmental stewardship, the Association of Active Tour Guides of La Union, Inc. (AsTG-LU) actively participated in the 11th National Tour Guides Convention and 2nd National Tour Guides Conference 2024 (NATCON) held on June 9-12, 2024 at Summit Hotel, Tacloban City, Leyte.
Organized by the Philippine Federation of Professional Tour Guide Associations, Inc. (TGFED), the convention provided a platform for tour guides from diverse regions to convene and delve into the significant roles they play in safeguarding the cultural and natural treasures of the Philippines.
The delegation from the AsTG-LU led by Association President Randall B. Brioso, La Union Provincial Tourism Office headed by officer-in-charge Julius A. Manabat, and other La Union DOT-Accredited tour guides, immersed themselves in the convention’s plenary sessions. The first day of the event included presentations focused on the crucial responsibilities of tour guides in preserving heritage and biodiversity.
It began with a presentation by Book Author Antonio Cinco on his topic “Keepers of Heritage - Leyte Gulf Landing Stories.” Mr. Cinco’s storytelling on the untold story of Leyte Gulf Landings as one of the largest naval battles in modern society, took the audience on a captivating journey through time, highlighting the significance of the Leyte Gulf Landing. He also touched on how tour guides narrate events for historical preservation.
Subsequently, Sustainable Tourism Champion and Former Cebu Tourism Officer Joselito “Boboi” Costas took the stage to present “Keepers of Biodiversity - Guides as Biodiversity Stewards.” The presentation underscored tour guides’ conservation of the natural environment, sustainable tourism practices, and strategies to protect the country’s diverse flora and fauna.
The combined impact of the presentations provided attendees with a comprehensive perspective on the dual responsibilities tour guides bear as both custodians of history and guardians of the environment. The active involvement of the AsTG-LU in the convention as member of TGFED, exemplified their dedication to promoting responsible tourism practices and preserving the nation’s heritage and biodiversity.
Other essential topics discussed in the conference included the Contribution of Tour Guiding Sector in achieving the National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP 2024-2028); Filipino Values for Excellent Tour Guides; Tour Guide Ethics; Management, Control, and Deal (TAUHAY Stress); Tour Guides as frontline ambassadors in Tourism; Continuous Upskilling for Tour Guides; Tour Guides’ Roles and Responsibilities on Community-Based Tourism Approach; and Own Brand as Tour Guides.
Moreover, tours in Tacloban and Palo were conducted offering attendees practical experiences to complement the theoretical discussions. Certificates and recognition were awarded to TGFED members, acknowledging their dedication and contributions to the tour guiding profession.
In the pursuit of LaUnion PROBINSYAnihan, Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David and the PGLU pledged continued support for AsTG-LU's sustainable tourism efforts. This collaboration shall enhance the preservation of La Union’s heritage and biodiversity.
