La Union Takes Part in Coastal Preservation

Over 300 participants from the Province of La Union jointly collected 2.571 tons of waste in the coastal clean-up activity led by the Office of the Provincial Governor -Environment and Natural Resources in Barangay Alaska, Aringay, La Union on September 21, 2019.

The event is in celebration of the International Coastal Clean Up (ICC) which is celebrated worldwide every third Saturday of September. In the Philippines, it is observed by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 470, S. 2003.

Participants were from the different departments of the Provincial Government of La Union, Municipality of Aringay, Philippine National Police, Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program beneficiaries and residents of Barangay Alaska.

ICC is the largest volunteer effort for ocean's health. Aside from cleaning the province’s beaches, coasts, rivers and waterways, underwater scuba diving was also done to remove the ocean trash. The activity provides protection of marine flora and fauna and prevents harm to water quality.

In the province of La Union, an individual produces an estimated 0.39 kg of garbage everyday. Some 60% of the province’s component Local Government Units are located in the coastal zone requiring efforts in waste management thru public support and multilateral cooperation.
