La Union Strengthens Protection of Marine Area

Senior Ecosystem Management Specialist Marilyn M. Racoma of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Provincial Environment and Natural Resources discusses the ecological and social importance of Marine Protected Area (MPA) Networking among the participants of the two-day MPA planning workshop held on September 11-12, 2018 at the Cong. Eufranio "Franny" C. Eriguel Hall, Speaker Pro-Tempore Francisco I. Ortega Provincial Legislative Building and Session Hall, Provincial Capitol, City of San Fernando, La Union.

Provincial Government of La Union-Environment and Natural Resources Unit (PGLU-ENRU) participated in the two-day planning workshop of Bacnotan-Balaoan-San Juan Marine Protected Area (MPA) led by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources - Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Office (DENR-PENRO) on September 11-12, 2018 at the Cong. Eufranio "Franny" C. Eriguel Hall, Speaker Pro-Tempore Francisco I. Ortega Provincial Legislative Building and Session Hall, Provincial Capitol, City of San Fernando, La Union.

Local Government Units of Bacnotan, Balaoan, San Juan, and SIFCare - Coastal Underwater Resource Management Actions also participated in the workshop.

Discussions in the event include the Ecological and Social Importance of MPA Network; Elements of an Operational and Functional MPA Network; Assessment on the Coral Reefs of Bacnotan, Balaoan, San Juan and City of San Fernando using the FISH-i Technology - a Pilot Project developed by UP-MSI; The Turtle Conservation in San Juan and the Ridge-To-Reef Approach; and the Status of Fishing Industry in Bacnotan, San Juan, and Balaoan.

During the workshop, the participants were able to identify the various threats to MPAs such as climate change, coastal development, overfishing, destructive fishing, sedimentation, and pollution. The participants were also able to identify
strategic measures on how to address the identified threats.

In line with the vision of Gov. Francisco Emmanuel "Pacoy" R. Ortega III for La Union to become the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025, MPAs aims to preserve marine and mangrove parks, natural reserves, among others which are considered as nature-based marine and coastal tourism.
