La Union Harnesses Statistics for Improved Health Services

The Province of La Union has harnessed the use of Statistics as it participated in the nationwide celebration of the 34th National Statistics Month (NSM) in the month of October 2023 focusing on improved health services.
With the theme, “Accelerating Progress: Promoting Data and Statistics for Healthy Philippines,” the activity aimed to promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the value of statistics to elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the province and the country.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David highlighted the role of statistics in the lives of kaprobinsiaan, “National Statistics Month serves as a reminder of the importance of data and statistics in our lives. It empowers us to make informed decisions and shape policies that drive progress. Kaya naman po, mga minamahal kong kaprobinsiaan, sana po sa selebrasyon at pagtitipon nating ito, ma acknowledge po natin lalo ang importansya ng estadistika sa ating mga buhay at sa pangkalahatan.”
The Opening Program was joined by 97 participants from Regional Line Agencies, Provincial Statistics Committee Members, Local Government Unit, and Academe. A motorcade was also conducted to raise awareness of the celebration.
Regional Director of the Department of Health Region 1 Dr. Paula Luz Paz U. Sydiongco emphasized the importance of statistics contributing to the collective efforts to improve public health in the province and in the whole country.
Information dissemination on the importance of statistics in promoting a healthy society was also conducted through an on-site statistical exhibit at the Provincial Capitol lobby and several radio and news interviews.
To engage the public, several NSM Contests were conducted including the Philippine Statistical Quiz where Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - South La Union Campus (DMMMSU SLUC) was hailed the champion; Jingle Sing and Dance for Secondary and Tertiary schools championed by the La Union National High School and Don Eulogio de Guzman Memorial National High School; Oratorical Contest for Secondary and Tertiary Schools where DMMMSU SLUC bagged both championships; Poster Slogan Making with Luna National High School as the Champion; Infographics Contest topped by the DMMMSU Mid La Union Campus; Essay Writing Contest wherein the Regional Science High School for Region 1 was the champion in the Secondary, DMMMSU MLUC for the Tertiary, and Don Eufemio F. Eriguel Memorial National High School for employees category; and Statistics Quiz won by SLC High School and DMMMSU SLUC for tertiary.
Other activities such as the NSM Media Awards and Logo Making Contest highlighted the importance of accurate data in promoting public health. The Fourth Governor’s Cup on Infographics was also conducted. An Online Statistical Symposium was an avenue for presentations by the PSC Members such as the Provincial Employment Services Office, PSA La Union, and the PDEA RO – 1 in Luna National High School, Aringay National High School, Pagudpud Integrated School, and DMMMSU SLUC.
The conduct of the different NSM activities helps create a collaborative environment mirroring La Union PROBINSYAnihan that encourages kaprobinsiaan in making data-based decisions.
