La Union celebrates 2022 National Children’s Month

The Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO), spearheaded series of activities in celebration of the 30th National Children’s Month (NCM) for the month of November.

This year’s celebration, which revolved on the theme, “Kalusugan, Kaisipan, at Karapatan ng Bawat Bata ating Tutukan,” focused on upholding the rights of children, especially in terms of Mental Health, post COVID-19 pandemic.

To promote the month-long celebration, series of activities, such as competitions and forums designed for the youth have been lined-up. The La Union Children and Youth Congress, an avenue where the children leaders selected their child representatives to the Local Council for the Protection of Children (LCPC) was staged on November 16, 2022. Furthermore, the “Salisal Dagiti Ubbing Ti La Union” was held on November 17, 2022 at Santol Civic Center, Santol, La Union where children from the 20 component Local Government Units (LGUs) of the province competed on Vocal Singing, Draw and Tell, Cultural Dancing, and in Child and Parent Skit. The activity promoted children’s participation and involvement in various child-led activities.

Pursuant to Provincial Ordinance 151-2018, the Conferment of the La Union Ten Outstanding Child Development Workers were also held on November 24, 2022 at Bauang Municipal Covered Court, Bauang, La Union. The activity gave due recognition to exemplary Child Development Workers, who attend to the development of children ages 3-4 years of age with patience, dedication, hard work and leadership,

As culminating activity, the PGLU hosted the Conferment of the 2019 Seal of Child Friendly Local Governance Award on November 25, 2022 at Hotel Ariana, Bauang, La Union where 18 out of 20 LGUs that passed the evaluation done by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG); Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD); and the Regional Council for the Welfare of Children (RCWC) were conferred with the award.

The child-friendly Philippines framework promotes child-friendly local governance wherein LGUs give priority to children in their planning, budgeting, legislation and delivery of services and is able to assure that all children enjoy their rights classified as survival, development, protection and participation.

Republic Act 10661 declaring November as NCM commemorates the adoption of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) by the United Nations (UN) General Assembly on November 20, 1989, and seeks to instill its significance in the Filipino consciousness.

Through this celebration which reflected the strengthened coordination of PGLU among the constituents, partner-agencies and non-government organizations., Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David affirmed her commitment to uphold the welfare of the young kabrobinsiaan as she emphasize her call towards #LaUnionProbinsiyanihan.
