The Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) continuously works on the Provincial Government of La Union’s (PGLU) #KalikasanNaman Campaign aligned to the new administration’s call for #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan through the conduct of Environmental Awareness and Education program at Sapdaan, Santol, La Union.

The activity was conducted in partnership with the Local Government Unit of Santol, La Union, the Philippine National Police (PNP), and the Department of Education. Of the 100 participants, 60% are students from Sapdaan Elementary School and 40% are from nearby households. Environmental Awareness and educational programs evolved on the discussion of climate change, solid waste management, forest protection, coastal protection, and freshwater resources protection - all in Iloco language to ensure proper transmission of knowledge especially among the youth.

A question-and-answer portion was also done to assess the knowledge gained by the students about the different environmental topics. Prices such as flashlights, mini fans, chocolates, and cash were given to students who gave the best answers. A distribution of love gifts in eco-bags with cups, towels, hats, and slippers to 100 beneficiaries was also done.

During the said activity, PG-ENRO Officer-In-Charge EnP. Annalyn Rosario-Valdez, expressed her gratitude to all the participants. She emphasized the importance of raising environmental awareness and education to the community, to mountain ecosystems, and the need to sustain its resources to help communities adapt to climate change. She further added that youth are important actors in forest development, protection, and conservation particularly in the ridge. “Your involvement in forest rehabilitation, development, and management is very necessary,” she stressed.

The said event was conducted in celebration of International Mountain Day 2023 with the theme “Restoring Mountain Ecosystem” which aims to increase awareness about the relevance of mountain ecosystems and call for nature-based solutions, best practices, and investments that build resilience, reduce vulnerability, and increase the ability of mountain to adapt to daily threats and extreme climatic events.
