GOITER PREVENTION PROMOTED IN BDH

GOITER AWARENESS WEEK. Nurse I Jeffrey Julian of Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) explains to the patients and their watchers the different kinds of goiter and how certain hormones affects certain bodily functions including body temperature, mood, excitability and pulse rate at the Out Patient Department of BDH on January 27, 2021. He also mentioned in his lecture some other complications and risk factors brought about by the disease.

In celebration of the Goiter Awareness Week, Nurse I Jeffery B. Julian of Bacnotan District Hospital conducted a lecture on January 27, 2021 at the Out Patient Department to orient patients about goiter.

Goiter is a condition that increases the size of thyroid which may develop in anyone, but is more common in women.

Nurse Julian discussed the common symptoms of Goiter such as swelling in the front of neck; feeling of tightness in the throat area; hoarseness; and neck vein swelling and dizziness when the arms are raised above the head. He explained the causes of Goiter as well as the different risk factors such as heredity, female gender and age.

To conclude his lecture, he advised his audience to increase intake of iodine in their diet, except for patients with hyperthyroidism wherein a low-iodine diet is usually prescribed prior to some treatments. Seafood, seaweeds, shrimps and other shellfish, including sushi, according to him are good source of iodine. An important reminder, is to consult the doctor regularly.
