First Environmental Quiz Bee marks La Union Celebration of Environmental Awareness Month

In celebration of Environmental Awareness Month; Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week; and Clean Air Month with the theme #CircularActionsForClimateHope, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) through the Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO), conducted an environmental quiz bee at the J&V Resort & Hotel, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The activity was participated in by elementary, secondary, and college students from 11 Local Government Units of La Union including Agoo, Aringay, Bacnotan, Bagulin, Balaoan, Bauang, Caba, Luna, Naguilian, Pugo, and San Juan. These informative environment trivia quizzes were done to enhance the knowledge of the youth about the environment.

PG-ENRO Officer-in-Charge, EnP. Annalyn Rosario-Valdez in her opening remarks reiterated the significance of the activity wherein it serves as a platform for the young kaprobinsiaan to celebrate their commitment to understanding and protecting our environment. She also added that management protection and conservation of natural resources require both collective effort and strengthened actions from different stakeholders including youth.

In her inspirational message, Gov. Raphaelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David, represented by Executive Assistant Mr. Eleazar Belgica congratulated everyone for the opportunity to represent their Local Government Units. Further, she stated that the youth sector plays a crucial role in ensuring environmental preservation and sustainability in the province, that’s why the PG-ENRO continues to promote environmental awareness to demonstrate and/or enhance knowledge of the young generation to protect and preserve their natural resources and to mitigate climate change and various pollutions in the community. “Hindi dapat natin kayang hayaang madungisan ng polusyon ang ating magagandang dalampasigan, luntiang tanawin, at mayayabong na lupain na deserve maabutan ng mga susunod na henerasyon,” she added.

The quiz bee concluded with Iyan Dwayne M. Diaz of Luna emerging as champion, followed by Leyam B. Bodestyne of Caba; Jharred Razhede B. Orpia of Aringay; Aedial Dane Yuon P. Gabua of Bacnotan; and Stephanie Rose V. Picar of Caba ranking 1st to 4th Runners-up respectively, for the Elementary level.

For the Secondary level, Zavier Anthoni O. Ede of Pugo secured the championship while Viggo Bamboo M. Estonato of Aringay; John Neo M. Ramos of Agoo; Jeruselle Ubongen of San Juan; and Marshal Alexis Salayon of Bauang were 1st to 4th Runners-up respectively.

Lastly, the College level was championed by Nesfena Itong Wal-it of Bacnotan followed by Arshehan B. Cainar of Bacnotan; Claudio L. Flores, Jr. of Naguilian; Jenny Rose F. Dumo of Bauang; and Rickyvhoy A. Mendoza of Bauang as 1st to 4th Runner-up.

As a way forward, PG-ENRO is planning to sustain and make the Environmental Quiz Bee an annual activity to further promote environmental awareness and stewardship among the youth in the Province of La Union.
