As part of the Caba District Hospital (CDH) Environmental Preservation and Protection Program, the hospital strengthened the implementation of 4S and 5S programs during the monthly family day cum clean up drive around the hospital on July 6, 2019 at CDH, Poblacion Sur, Caba, La Union.

Staff joined forces for the cleaning of the hospital vicinity and microgarden, improving the material recovery facility, rebuilding the wastes holding area, and conducting “5S” (Sort, Straighten, Sweep, Standardize and Sustain) in their respective units or sections.

According to Hospital Chief Dr. Gretchen F. Aromin, 4S, which stands for Search and destroy mosquito breeding places; use of Self-protection measures; Seek early consultation for fevers lasting more than two days; and Say no to indiscriminate fogging, is strictly implemented to combat dengue especially this rainy season.

5S are words that describe the steps of a workplace organization process. In simple terms, the five S methodology help a workplace remove items that are no longer needed (sort), organize the items to optimize efficiency and flow (straighten), clean the area in order to more easily identify problems (Sweep), implement color coding and labels to stay consistent with other areas (standardize) and develop behaviors that keep the workplace organized over the long term (sustain).

As an incentive, after the Clean-up Drive, the Infection Prevention and Control Committee along with the Program and Awards Committee chose three cleanest and most organized units or sections. They were given Certificates of Recognition as Best 5S Implementer for the Month. For the previous months, the Laboratory Unit, Pharmacy Unit and Finance Unit were awarded as the Best 5S Implementers.

Family Day cum hospital clean-up drive is a monthly activity of the hospital which is scheduled every first Saturday of the month.
