In celebration of the National Awareness Week for the Prevention of Sexual Abuse and Exploitation, Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) invited representatives from the Philippine National Police-Bacnotan, to conduct awareness lecture to the patients and their companions at the Out Patient Department on February 18, 2021.

PCol. Karen A. Borbe from the PNP-Bacnotan Women’s Desk, mentioned that based on recent survey, there were reported sexual abuse cases in the locality. Through the joint efforts of concerned agencies and individuals, crimes such as this are now being acted upon by proper authorities.

According to PCol. Borbe, awareness lectures become a venue for the audience to evaluate actions. Tips and knowledge from such lectures stimulates awareness making people more vigilant and conscious in their environment.

Sexual exploitation, PCol. Borbe explained, refers to any actual attempted abuse of a position of vulnerability, power or trust for sexual purposes. Sexual abuse is the threatened physical intrusion of a sexual nature, whether by force or under unequal or coercive conditions.

She emphasized that with strong will and determined action of the abused and exploited, trust in place to the law enforcers, the crime can be combated and offenders can be imprisoned.
