To educate the patients about proper medicine intake, Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) pharmacists led by Ms. Maria Teresa Ramos conducted an awareness lecture at the out-patient department in observance of the Generics Awareness Month and World Pharmacists Day on September 25, 2019 at the BDH, Bacnotan, La Union.

This year’s theme for the World Pharmacists Day was “Safe and effective medicines for all.” Ms. Ramos shared that the theme aims to promote awareness on pharmacists’ crucial role in safeguarding patient safety through improving medicine use and reducing medication errors.

BDH pharmacists discussed about rational drug use which is the use of an appropriate, efficacious, cost-effective, and safe drug for the right indication, dose, and formulation at right intervals and duration. Moreover, they reminded the BDH clients about the careful use of antibiotics to prevent the increasing antimicrobial resistance.

Leaflets about this topic were distributed during the lecture. They also informed the public about the Generics Act of 1988 or Republic Act No. 6675.

At the end of the lectures, BDH pharmacists reminded lecture participants to buy medicines only in pharmacies registered in the Food and Drug Administration to ensure safety and efficacy of items purchased. Free over-the-counter medicines and food supplements were also provided to the patients.
