To promote the benefits of breastfeeding this National Breastfeeding Awareness Month, Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH), through its Breastfeeding Committee, conducted a breastfeeding “tree of life” photo-contest called “BRELFIE” among breastfeeding mothers at the out-patient department on August 28, 2018.

Seven breastfeeding mothers participated in this breastfeeding selfie or “brelfie,” which allows moms to transform their intimate moments with their babies into a stunning pieces of art with the use of a cellphone application.

“The tree of life photos illustrate what breastfeeding truly looks like from inside the body. It depicts the breast as a system of roots branching out into a tree in the baby’s feeding mouth showing the life-giving relationship between a mother and her child,” said Dr. Resie Aurea C. Pimpinio, head of the Breastfeeding Committee.

According to Dr. Pimpinio, BDH continues to promote and support breastfeeding for the good health of the children and the mothers of La Union. This activity is another way of achieving the La Union Health Governance: Healthy La Union, Happy La Union by 2022.

The contest served as a reminder to mothers and everyone of the importance of breastfeeding. It emphasizes that mother’s milk is still best for babies’ health.

Members of said committee conduct regular lectures at the hospital out-patient department to enjoin expectant mothers to breastfeed their babies and point out the nutritional and immunologic benefits of it on their babies’ health. Lectures were attended by pregnant women while waiting for their pre-natal check-up.
