4S AGAINST DENGUE: SEARCH AND DESTROY. An employee of Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) spearheads the finding and emptying (search and destroy) of tires with stagnant waters that serves as a breeding place for mosquitoes during the hospital’s clean-up drive on June 21, 2019 at Barangay Cabarsican, Bacnotan, La Union. Said activity is part of the Dengue Awareness Month Celebration.
Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) personnel, led by pediatrician, Dr. Jennifer Gamiao, spearheads 4S Against Dengue Activity in the coastal community of Barangay Cabarsican, Bacnotan, La Union on June 21, 2019. This is part of the celebration of Dengue Awareness Month.
BDH personnel led the community in the fight against dengue by conducting lectures and clean-up drive in said barangay. Specifically, they worked together in finding and emptying (search and destroy) stagnant water in tires, pots, cans, and the like, thus, eliminating breeding places of mosquitoes.
Dr. Gamiao, educated mothers about the 4S against mosquito-borne diseases such as Dengue, Zika, and Chikungunya. 4S stands for Search and destroy mosquito-breeding places; Self-protection measures against mosquito bite; Seek early consultation when experiencing fever for at least two days; and Say “Yes” to fogging if there is an impending outbreak.
Aside from maintaining cleanliness in the surroundings, Ms. Maria Teresa Ramos, BDH pharmacist, also imparted to the mothers the proper handwashing techniques to avoid occurrence of diseases.
According to the World Health Organization, the global incidence of Dengue has grown dramatically in recent decades. About half of the world's population is now at risk. Dengue virus is transmitted by female mosquitoes mainly of the species Aedes aegypti and, to a lesser extent, A. albopictus. This mosquito also transmits Chikungunya, Yellow fever and Zika infection.
