Student representatives accompanied by their respective coaches from Junior High Schools in the La Union Central Agri-Tourism Circuit such as La Union National High School, San Juan National High School, Bacnotan National High School and Bitalag Integrated School participated.

The activity was initiated by the members of the Tobacco Cessation and Control Committee chaired by Dr. Ardilyn A. Nuval, and the Nephrology Committee chaired by Dr. Ana Claire V. Pagnas. It is one of the means of advocating the anti-smoking campaign of the hospital and a way of informing students on the importance of caring for their health especially their kidneys and lungs.

The winner in the Red Orchid essay writing contest was Ms. Chali Grace Retuerne from Bacnotan National High School, with her composition “I’m Dying Because of You.” The logo drawn by Stuart Yvan Flores from La Union National High School, won the first place as well as the Patients’ Choice Award. It will be used as symbol for the hospital’s brand and nephrology advocacy. The awarding ceremony was held on June 29, 2018 at BDH, Bacnotan, La Union.

BDH envisions itself as a Nephrology Center by 2022. Red Orchid is a smoke-free campaign which was conceptualized to combat tobacco use and to work for a tobacco-free environment.
