Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) celebrates National Blood Donor’s Month by conducting its 9th blood donation activity at the hospital on July 21, 2018.

In spite of the heavy rains and stormy weather, 29 donors appeared. In partnership with the Philippine Red Cross – La Union – San Fernando City Chapter, a total of 21 blood bag were collected and were voluntarily given by hospital personnel and donors from two partner agencies of BDH namely, the Regional Special Training Unit I – Police Regional Office in Camp Brig. General Oscar Florendo, and Motorista Pilipinas – La Union Chapter. Resident physicians, Dr. Stephen M. Isidro, chair of the Hospital Blood Transfusion Committee, and Dr. Fred Allison U. Concepcion, internist and member of said committee, set an example for the hospital staff in donating their blood.

July has been designated National Blood Donor’s Month pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 1021, dated July 9, 1997, and the Implementing Rules and Regulations of the National Blood Services Act of 1994 (RA 7719). The observance aims to build public awareness of the need for quality and safe blood, honor and recognize blood donors, and encourage regular blood donation.

In the Declaration of Policy of RA 7719, it is mentioned that in order to promote public health, the state should promote and encourage voluntary blood donation by the citizenry and to instill public consciousness of the principle that blood donation is a humanitarian act; provide for adequate, safe, affordable and equitable distribution of supply of blood and blood products; inform the public of the need for voluntary blood donation to curb the hazards caused by the commercial sale of blood; and teach the benefits and rationale of voluntary blood donation in the existing health subjects of the formal education system in all public and private schools, in the elementary, high school and college levels as well as the non-formal education system.

Moreover, according to the World Health Organization, the safest blood donors are voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors from low-risk populations. The goal is for all countries to obtain all their blood supplies through voluntary, unpaid donors, in accordance with World Health Assembly resolution 28.72, which was adopted back in 1975.

Through the concerted efforts of the different sectors of society and the Provincial Government of La Union through one of its hospitals, BDH, a sustainable supply of blood from voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors for the whole province is continually achieved especially this dengue season when blood and blood products are most needed by affected patients.

Donors from the Regional Special Training Unit I – Police Regional Office in Camp Brig. General Oscar Florendo together with Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) personnel and staff of Philippine Red Cross – La Union – San Fernando City Chapter pose for posterity after successfully donating their blood during the blood donation activity on July 21, 2018 at BDH, Bacnotan, La Union.
