Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) personnel, headed by Dr. Zenserly D. Pagaduan, conducted Prostate Awareness Program activities among male patients on May 21, 2018.
A total of 24 males between ages 25 to 70 participated in the activity and availed of the free services. They were provided with health lecture, free prostate consultation and Digital Rectal Exam (DRE) by Dr. Neddy Lee Lim, Adult and Pediatric Urologist. Majority of the patients who came were senior citizens who actively participated during the open forum
As an additional benefit for these patients, the hospital’s laboratory section provided four participants of free Total Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA).
In the Philippines, annual screening with DRE and PSA is recommended by the Philippine Urological Association (PUA). PSA is a blood test while DRE is done by inserting a gloved finger into the rectum to feel the prostate gland if it is abnormally enlarged and hard. Together, these tests help detect prostate disease in men who have no symptoms yet.
As mentioned in the lectures, the prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system. It lies just below the bladder (the organ that collects and empties urine) and in front of the rectum (the lower part of the intestine). It is about the size of a walnut and surrounds part of the urethra (the tube that empties urine from the bladder). This gland tends to increase in size as males advance in age, thus, obstructing the flow of urine.
According to the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development (PCHRD), prostate cancer is currently the most common form of cancer in males worldwide and among Filipino males; however, is second only to lung cancer in prevalence.Prostate cancer causes pain, frequency and difficulty in urinating; problems during sexual intercourse; or erectile dysfunction. When blood is seen in the urine or semen; and pain in the back, hips, or pelvis does not go away, it is recommended to consult a physician.
This Prostate Awareness Program is done in the hospital every year since 2014 to have an early diagnosis of prostate cancer among males in the Central Agri-tourism circuit. Through this activity which is in line with the hospital’s Nephrology/ Kidney Care advocacy, BDH is committed to helping the province realize its vision on health governance, that is, “Healthy La Union, Happy La Union by 2022.”
