The Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH), headed by Dr. Zenserly D. Pagaduan, in cooperation with the Bacnotan Fire Station, conducted fire and earthquake drill on May 22, 2018. Aiming to be equipped with knowledge about disaster preparedness, the activity was participated in by the hospital patients and staff.
Said drill is an annual activity lead by the hospital’s Emergency and Disaster Preparedness Committee, chaired by Dr. Raul Sagun. Apart from being a requirement for permit renewal, the drill aims to teach personnel and patients on how to respond to the complications of an actual fire and earthquake. It also aims to evaluate how well the emergency plan is working.
Participants of the drill were taught to remember the acronym RACE in case of fire. R stands for Rescue that is to assist anyone in immediate danger and help get them to a safe area as fast as possible. A for Alarm or alert others by activating any available alarm system, contact fire station to report location of fire and alert on-site personnel. C for Contain or confine the fire as much as possible by closing doors and windows behind you during the evacuation. And E for Extinguish small fire if you have the proper equipment and is safe to do so yourself.
Members of the committee also underwent rapid Response Competency Training conducted by Bacnotan Fire Station last year where they acquired knowledge and skills on Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Basic Life Support (BLS); fire fighting/suppression; collapsed structure search and rescue; and high angle rescue. A second batch of this training will be conducted this year.
Through these capability enhancement activities for hospital personnel, severe injuries and casualties will be minimized or avoided when faced with the actual disaster and also assuring patient safety.
