As a hospital that cares for its patients' awareness regarding viral diseases and embodies La Union PROBINSYAnihan, Naguilian District Hospital conducted a Tuberculosis (TB) lecture led by Nurse Jo Ann D. Mabalo for its Out Patient Department on January 30, 2024.

It is their aim to promote public awareness about the health, social, and economic implications of tuberculosis in an effort to eliminate the stigma and social discrimination among TB patients.

According to Nurse Mabalo, Tuberculosis bacteria is transmitted through air and not by surface contact contrary to popular belief. “Hindi napapasa sa simpleng paghawak sa taong may TB maliban na lang kung malanghap ang bacteria o … direktang pakikipag usap,” she clarified.

Moreover, signs and symptoms of the disease were also enumerated during the talk to equip the public with valuable knowledge they can utilize for quick prevention. These include coughing for more than two weeks, visibility of blood in the sputum (saliva and mucus), weight loss, fever, easy fatigue, night sweats, chest pain, and loss of appetite. It is strongly advised to seek immediate medical intervention when a patient feels two or more of the aforementioned symptoms.

The Provincial Government of La Union, through its Provincial and District Hospitals, continues to bring awareness on different illnesses to help KaPROBINSYAnihan make better health decisions.
