Recognizing outstanding leadership and service in the barangays, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) of La Union gave a send-off tribute to Ex-Officio Board Member (BM) Geraldine “Denny” R. Ortega as she steps down from her position as the President of the Liga ng mga Barangay in La Union on January 23, 2024 at the SP Session Hall, City of San Fernando, La Union.

BM Denny, who is strongly admired by her colleagues for her intelligence, compassion, and commitment to public service, has served as an ex-officio BM for five years. Prior to that, she chaired the La Union Vibrant Women, Inc. during the leadership of Gov. Manoling Ortega where her advocacies for the rights and welfare of women in the province stood out.

As a member of the SP, BM Denny chaired the Committee on Barangay Affairs and the Committee on Agriculture and Aquatic Resources. She initiated a lot of assistance for the welfare of all 576 Barangays of La Union, and the agriculture sector. Further, she proposed several significant legislative accomplishments for the province such as the ordinance mandating the registration of poultry and livestock raisers, and poultry and livestock farm owners; the ordinance on the registration of all peddlers; and the ordinance requiring all Punong Barangays of the province to include container gardening among their urban agriculture programs.

In her farewell message, BM Denny delivered a powerful and emotional speech about hope and resilience in the face of adversity. She thanked her colleagues and constituents for their support over the years. She said that she is proud of the work that the board has accomplished during her time in office, and she is confident that the new President of the Liga ng mga Barangay will continue to serve the community well.

"It has been an honor to serve the province. I am grateful for the opportunity to have made a difference in the lives of others, and I could not have achieved these accomplishments as Association of Punong Barangay President if not for the help of my colleagues,” she said.

Gov. Rapahelle Veronica “Rafy” Ortega-David thanked BM Denny and mentioned how her commitment to public service has inspired her in her journey as the Governor of La Union.

“Isa po kayo sa mga tinitingala kong public servants. I have witnessed your unwavering dedication for the betterment of our women here in La Union as you served as the LUVWI Chairwoman. Then you took on the challenge of leading the barangays of the province as a whole. Ang inyo pong commitment sa trabaho, malasakit sa mga kaPROBINSYAnihan at pagmamahal sa ating probinsya ang isa sa mga pinanghahawakan kong inspirasyon as I continue to walk through this journey as the leader of La Union,” Gov. Rafy expressed.

Vice Governor Mario Eduardo also shared his thoughts saying, “BM Denny has been a true asset to this board. She is always willing to go the extra mile to help her constituents, and she has a deep understanding of the issues facing our province. We will miss her very much."

The Provincial Legislators also expressed their profound appreciation and commendation to BM Denny in a resolution authored by Board Member Victor I. Rivera. The resolution honored BM Denny’s commitment to the welfare of the grassroots communities, ardently advocating for their needs and concerns and bridging the gap between the municipal, city, and provincial governments with the barangays which played a crucial role in the local governance structure.

Also present during BM Denny’s send-off are Provincial Administrator Francisco Emmanuel “Pacoy” R. Ortega III; San Fernando City Vice Mayor Alfred Ortega; and some Department Heads of the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU).

As PGLU bids farewell to BM Denny, her legacy of exemplary leadership, dedication to public service, and profound commitment to the welfare of the province's communities will resonate for years to come.
