The Provincial Government of La Union through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg) has distributed P1.5 million worth of fertilizers and a variety of hybrid rice seeds to eight municipalities including Bacnotan, Bangar, Luna, San Juan, Agoo, Bauang, Rosario, and Santo Tomas on September 1, 2023, at the OPAg Conference Room, City of San Fernando, La Union.

The project aims to attain food sufficiency to cope with the growing demand of the local population. Hybrid rice production technology has been identified as one of the keys to attaining this goal.

The establishment of La Union Clustered Hybrid Advocacy Mentoring Partnership (LU CHAMP) aims to demonstrate the performance of different hybrid rice varieties in a five-hectare clustered area in the different municipalities in the province.

As a result, the OPAg conducted the LU Champ Farmers Field Day/Harvest Festival at Brgy. Nagyubuyuban, San Juan, La Union, and Brgy. Bawanta, Bauang, La Union on October 6 and 13, 2023. This is one of the concluding activities of the LU Champ Technology Demonstration for the Wet Season as well as a culminating activity for all farmers in planting five hybrid rice varieties for the eight LGU beneficiaries.

In addition, the Agronomic data of the five varieties was also presented during the activity. This was participated in by the farmer leaders and members of the agricultural associations, Agricultural Extension Workers, and Municipal Agriculturists.

Gov. Rafy Ortega-David said that through this program, she will be able to help local farmers yield more quality rice. She added that she will always be in support of the initiatives and programs that will help local farmers and continuously make efforts for La Union to be the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
