In a bid to bolster agricultural productivity and promote food sufficiency, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU), through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist (OPAg), has successfully distributed P1.5 million worth of fertilizers and a variety of hybrid rice seeds to eight municipalities in La Union on September 1, 2023, at the OPAg Conference Room in the City of San Fernando, La Union.
The recipient municipalities include Bacnotan, Bangar, Luna, San Juan, Agoo, Bauang, Rosario, and Santo Tomas. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to meet the increasing demands of the local population for quality rice while ensuring sustainability in agriculture.
Central to this effort is the adoption of hybrid rice production technology, recognized as an essential key in achieving the province's food sufficiency goals. The establishment of the La Union Clustered Hybrid Advocacy Mentoring Partnership (LU CHAMP) aims to demonstrate the performance of different hybrid rice varieties in a five-hectare clustered area in the different municipalities in the province.
Each of the recipient Local Government Units received an allocation comprising 25 packs of hybrid seeds, 10 bags of urea, 15 bags of complete fertilizer, 10 bags of Ammonium Phosphate, 5 bags of Muriate of Potash, 50 bags of Organic Fertilizer, and 5 bottles each of Herbicide, Insecticide, and Fungicide.
Gov. Raphaelle Veronica "Rafy" Ortega-David expressed her commitment to supporting local farmers through this program, emphasizing its potential to enhance rice yields and quality. She reaffirmed her dedication to endorsing initiatives and programs that empower local farmers that contribute to the realization of the province's vision of becoming the Heart of Agri-Tourism in Northern Luzon by 2025.
The distribution of fertilizers and hybrid seeds marks a significant step towards realizing La Union's agricultural potential and ensuring food security for the kaprobinsiaan. The La Union PROBINSYANihan between the provincial government and the agricultural sector exemplifies a strong commitment to sustainable agriculture and economic development of La Union.
