To foster collaborative efforts in the preservation of the Iloko identity and language for the people of La Union, the Provincial Government of La Union (PGLU) led by Gov. Raphaelle Veronica β€œRafy” Ortega-David formally sealed a partnership with Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University - Mid La Union Campus (DMMMSU-MLUC) through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) for the Establishment of ELYUKANO Center for Ilokano Studies on October 24, 2022, at the Office of the Provincial Governor, Provincial Capitol Building, City of San Fernando, La Union.

Gov. Rafy and University President Dr. Jaime I. Manuel, Jr. represented the PGLU and DMMMSU, respectively. Provincial Tourism Officer (PTO) Arthur S. Cortez, Jr. and DMMMSU-MLUC Chancellor Dr. Eduardo C. Corpuz also joined the activity to serve as witnesses.

Airing her support and commitment to empower the Iloko language in La Union, Gov Rafy in her speech, as delivered by PTO Cortez, shared that this was one of her priorities and commitments since she assumed office – to advocate the rich culture of the province and revitalize the Iloko language, as she recognized the important role of the mother tongue in increasing literacy and reshaping identity which is vital for nation-building. It was also emphasized in the speech that this is a strategic partnership especially because of the current PGLU’s focus on preserving Ilokano culture.

This forged LGU-academe collaboration is another notable milestone for the provincial government to strengthen partnerships and cooperation in promoting and implementing the Language Code of La Union.

DMMMSU Director for Library Services Sonia B. Siago and MLUC Head for Library Services Ruby Lyn C. Narra were also present during the MOA Signing.

The establishment of a Center for Ilokano Studies in La Union shall be a well-known repository of the Ilokanos’ rich and colorful culture and heritage, both material and non-material which will help in preserving the tradition, literature as well as outputs of talents of the Kaprobinsiaans around the province and lead the development of Ilokano knowledges across all academic disciplines.

In realization to #LaUnionPROBINSYAnihan, PGLU with strong support of DMMMSU, looks forward to the establishment of the ELYUKANO Center as a way of conserving and protecting the Iloko culture and heritage in the province.
