With a strong commitment and dedication to advocate the welfare and protection of the Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in the province of La Union, the Provincial Government of La Union through its Public Employment Service Office, which also serves as the Migrants Desk Office (MDO) of the Province, spearheaded the facilitation of Financial Awareness Training to 102 Overseas Filipino Worker (OFWs) Returnees coming from the different municipalities of Sudipen, Bangar, Santol, Luna and Balaoan, La Union on August 12, 2022 in Bacnotan Covered Court, Bacnotan, La Union.
PGLU collaborated with the Municipal Government of Bacnotan, La Union through their MDO and the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration β Regional Office I (OWWA-RO I) in bringing the OFW Returnees together in one venue to engage them in empowering their financial literacy skills and mindset for better economic management to improve their present financial status.
In a message delivered by Executive Assistant Mr. Justo Orros III, Gov. Raphaelle Veronica βRafyβ Ortega-David shared her heartfelt gratitude to the OFW Returnees of the province. βNais ko pong pasalamatan ang bawat-isa sa inyong pagdalo sa Financial Awareness Training para sa inyong mga Overseas Filipino Workers o OFWs. Ammok apo a busy kayo, ngem nabaelanyo latta ti immatendar iti daytoy a ganuat aglalo ta daytoy ket para iti pagsayaatanyo met amin.β
βKayong mga OFWs ay ang mga Makabagong Bayani ng ating lipunan. Saludo ako sa inyo dahil sa napakalaking ambag ninyo sa bayan lalo na sa ekonomiya. Sa kabila ng mga suliraning ating kinakaharap tulad ng CoViD-19 Pandemic, kung saan naapektohan ang mga trabaho ng nakararami sa inyo, nananatili kayong matatag at punung-puno ng pag-asa. Dahil sa ipinapamalas ninyong ito, ang inyo pong lingkod ay mas ginaganahan na bumuo at magsulong ng mga programa na mag-aangat sa inyong sector.β
Bacnotan Municipal Mayor Divine C. Fontanilla also graced the activity. She extended her greetings to the participants and congratulated the PGLU and OWWA-RO I for the successfully organizing the training and bringing the program closer to the OFWs especially at this time of the new normal.
Ms. Charito C. Dator, Provincial Migrants Desk Officer, also gave a brief description about the establishment Migrants Desk Offices at the Local Government Units (LGUs) on providing proper assistance to OFWs and their families in their respective jurisdiction.
During the training, Ms. Racquel M. Caoile of OWWA-RO I oriented the participants about the various reintegration programs of OWWA for OFWs. In addition, several scholarship programs for the dependents of the OFWs, enterprise development and loan program and other programs for OFWs were also discussed by Ms. Caoile.
National Reintegration Center for OFWs (NRCO) β Region I Coordinator Ms. Iries R. Sarmiento, discussed the topics on budgeting, goal setting and financial planning. In her presentation, she provided the participants vital information on savings, earning additional money, financial planning and setting a timeline for empowering OFWs and their families to handle their financial issues and challenges efficiently that affect their everyday lives. Videos embedded with financial literacy lessons are also played during the training.
With the collaborative efforts and PROBINSYAnihan of the PGLU, Municipal MDOs in La Union, and OWWA β RO I, the OFW sector in the province shall be more empowered as more programs and services responding to the needs of the OFWs are possible.
