5,000 mangrove seedlings were planted by volunteers during the massive mangrove tree planting activity in Sitio Kabugbugan, Barangay Pila, Luna, La Union on July 7, 2022.
Aligned with the Provincial Government of La Unionโs #KalikasanNaman campaign on fostering ecological integrity and a clean and healthy environment, the said activity was made possible with the active partnership of the Provincial Government of La Union, through the Provincial Government - Environment and Natural Resources Office, and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Luna, La Union headed by Mayor Gary Napeรฑas Pinzon.
Joined by volunteers from LGU Luna, Bureau of Fire Protection, Catholic Women's League of the Saint Catherine of Alexandria Parish, Philippine National Police, Nalvo Sur Elementary School, Cantoria Central Elementary School and Barangay Council and Daycare Center, the said activity intensifies the wide-ranging plan of the Provincial Government to rehabilitate and develop mangrove areas in the province as part of the Project TREE or Taking Responsibility for the ELYUs Environment.
According to research, the development of mangrove areas highly contributes to a clean environment as they improve air quality through the process of photosynthesis -producing oxygen and taking in carbon dioxide. Moreover, the sturdy rooting systems of mangrove filters and purifies water, trapping sediment from damaging coral reefs and seagrass. For coastal communities, mangroves serve as natural barrier against violent storm surges and floods, thus the need to manage rehabilitate and develop these natural resources.
The Provincial Government of La Union promotes #LaUnionProbinsyanihan as a response to the call for unity in showing concern for the environment through engaging in activities that aim to protect and preserve nature which is essential in building a #StrongerLaUnion, a province worth living in.
