To give patients a deeper understanding of the prevention and control of Rabies, Miss Aiza Valdez, Nurse I, and Ms Lani Balagot, Nurse II, of the Anti-Rabies Committee of Bacnotan District Hospital (BDH) conducted a lecture at the BDH Out Patient Department-ABTC on March 14, 2022 and March 31, 2022. Ms. Valdez gave a thorough explanation of the Rabies disease and how it affects the human body once acquired. She also mentioned and corrected some facts and myths of the disease.
Ms. Valdez presented detailed information about rabies, its transmission, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment. She also encouraged everyone to be responsible pet owners in compliance with RA 9482 or the βAnti Rabies Act of 2007β, to wit:, a responsible pet owner shall : a) have their dog regularly vaccinated against Rabies and maintain a registration card which shall contain all vaccinations conducted on their Dog, for accurate record purposes. b) submit their Dogs for mandatory registration c) maintain control over their Dog and not allow to roam the streets or any public place without a leash d) be a responsible owner by providing their dog with proper grooming, adequate food and clean shelter e) within twenty four (24)) hours, report immediately any dog biting incident to the concerned officials for investigation or for any appropriate action and place such dog under observation by a government or private veterinarian and f) assist the dog bite victim immediately and shoulder the medical expenses relative to the victimβs injuries.
Ms. Valdez mentioned that despite the imposition of National Rabies Prevention and Control Program, a significant number of animal bite cases are flocking the Animal Bite and Treatment Centers, thus, the need for a collaborative efforts from the different agencies concerned including pet owners, shall be intensified to achieve the objective of this program. As for BDH initiatives, animal bite and rabies lectures are scheduled twice a week at the BDH OPD-ABTC to remind all patients about the risks of the disease.
