In support to the #KalikasanNaman Campaign, the Provincial Government of La Union’s (PGLU) forefront program in fostering ecological integrity, and clean and healthy environment, the Provincial Government-Environment and Natural Resources Office (PG-ENRO) strengthened its programs and initiatives on environmental advocacies through a two-day Environmental Awareness Activity held on December 9-10, 2021.

In partnership with the municipality of San Gabriel and the assistance of the Philippine National Police (PNP), the PG-ENRO conducted Community Environmental Awareness activity on December 9, 2021 which aims to raise awareness and educate the youth on the importance of mountains and help communities adapt to climate change and conserve natural resources.

The conduct of Environmental Awareness in San Gabriel evolved on the discussion of climate change, forest protection, coastal and freshwater resources protection in connection to proper solid waste management. Distribution of hygiene kits and slippers to 98 beneficiaries, mostly children, also happened in the activity. Moreover, the Municipal Health Unit (MHU) of San Gabriel stressed the importance of CoViD-19 vaccines and conducted on-the-spot Vaccination to interested individuals. On the other hand, PNP distributed different Information and Education Campaign (IEC) materials/pamphlets as they discussed their commitment to serve and protect the people, especially women and children. A total of 121 children and adults participated in the said successful activity.

In line with the annual celebration of International Mountain Day (IMD), on December 10, 2021 PG-ENRO Staff climmed and documented La Union’s highest peak - Mount Mugong. The team trekked a distance of 2.78 kilometers uphill from the nearest community (Sitio Nalusbo) and reached the summit after almost 2.5 hours. Along the scenic trail, floral diversity of vines, ferns, palms and native trees and shrubs , the team was able to appreciate the beauty even more.

To commemorate their activity and to take part in the IMD celebration, PG-ENRO planted 10 native seedlings of Kupang and Arangin on top of the mountain.

PGLU remains optimistic that our kaprobinsiaan will continue supporting #KalikasanNaman and shall take part in taking care of our natural resources for a more ecological, clean and environment-friendly province.
